And he has anointed me as his preacher, his apostle, and his teacher of truth to the nations. The confidence of my calling enables me to overcome every difficulty without shame, for I have an intimate revelation of this God. And my faith in him convinces me that he is more than able to keep all that I’ve placed in his hands safe and secure until the fullness of his appearing. 2 Timothy 1:11-12, The Passion Translation
Who are you at your core?
What is that thing, that seed planted deep in your heart, that ingrained identity that was whispered to you by your King? What is the treasure inside of you – who is it that you’re called to be?
Life has knocked you down a few times. I know that. Come on, really when we think about it, we’re all boxers heading into the ring with a Rocky Balboa heart knowing for sure that we can win this thing…and then the punches come raining down.
We know what we’re made to do, but we still get knocked to the ground with blows that make us breathless and confused, shaking our heads, trying to get our vision back.
If you're like me, you get to the point where you realize that your Rocky heart is strong, but you never had anyone tell you how to fight for your dreams, how to be sure of your calling.
So here I am. And I'm saying, come on, shake that head of yours and think - what is the fire inside of you?
You know what I’m talking about. I know you do. Maybe you haven’t thought about it for a while. Maybe you’ve even tried to pretend it’s not there. But it’s there. It’s there and you know it. Oh gosh, but rustling it up from the land of hope and from the valley of memory where that hope was born, it can be so hard. Because what if we get it out and wipe it off and then we have to fight to believe in it again?
Because you know how it’s been. So many times you’re the only one who knows about it. You’re the only one who’s seen it and sometimes, yes sometimes even maybe someone said something to you that was the exact opposite of what you knew was burning inside of you.
And while you knew what they said wasn’t true (because can you really, truly deny who you are?), it still hurt and it made you hide your treasure in a closet, waiting for the day and the moment and circumstances and the people to be safe – somewhere safe for you to bring the treasure out into the open.
But I have news for you. It’s never really safe, not in the way you think. And you’ll have to fight, but it’s not the fight you think.
Because here’s the thing, when you have confidence in your calling, it doesn’t mean you have confidence in yourself.
It means you have confidence in the Calling Creator, in Jesus Christ, the Dream-Giver Himself, the author and the perfecter.
Friend, please, please let this sink down deep into your soul.
Want to know how to fight for your dreams, how to be sure of God's calling on your life?
Find the treasure. Take it out of the closet. Clean it off. Look at it long and hard. This gifting, this calling, this person you know you’ve been created to be, it is the undeniable creative expression of Christ in You – look hard – remind yourself what that is. I think you know. I think you remember.
Look at it. Embrace it. And place it in the hands of your King and realize that He will bring it to pass. That is the “safe” you can count on. Let your faith convince you that, “…he is more than able to keep all that [you’ve] placed in his hands safe and secure until the fullness of his appearing.”
Write it down. Scream it loud. Become so confident of the call (because of the God who created it!) that you can “overcome every difficulty without shame, for [you] have an intimate revelation of this God”!!!
Step back into the ring, my friend. Step back in, and this time with head held high and without that shame you’ve been carrying. You know who you are. Your calling, your God-dream, is the creative expression of Christ in you. And nothing can overcome it for it is the very Word of God at work in your life, and there is no power in this entire universe that can defeat His Word.
So do you want know what the fight really is? It’s not a fight to make the calling happen, the dream come true. The calling, the God-dream inside of you, exists already and it cannot be revoked. The fight is for focus, fighting to focus on the call and stop letting distractions take you away from it. Fighting to focus on the King of the call instead of letting the words and actions and circumstances around you make you start doubting it.
Come on, Rocky. You’re not knocked out yet. Remember why you have fire in your veins, remember what you’re fighting for, don’t let this blow take you out. Let it ignite the sparks, let it fan the flames, get off the ropes and stand up straight on your tired legs and let out that war cry, “I know who I have believed in and I know that He is faithful to complete what He has started!!!”
You can and will get black eyes and broken noses, but that’s part of the deal, right? You knew that when you signed up for this thing. But you.cannot.lose.
Now look at me. I’m in your corner. I’m holding this towel and I’ve got a blade ready to cut open those eyelids so you can see again – come on now, I know you want to win this thing, so you’ll take the pain, right? Let me make this plain – you can opt yourself out. But if you don’t, there’s no way this thing isn’t going to come to pass.
Are you confident? Are you confident enough of this that you can start fighting for the right things? Fight for focus, fight for knowing more of Christ, fight for tenacity, fight to maintain this confidence and fight for that until it’s so deep in your soul that all the other stuff knocking you around doesn’t make you second-guess who you’re called to be and what you’re called to do.
Take it seriously. It’s time to stop diminishing your treasure because of what you see or don’t see or because of what others say or think.
Paul didn’t diminish. He didn’t diminish and he even instructed us not to “…minimize the powerful gift that operates in your life.” (1 Timothy 4:14, TPT) And man oh man, if Paul isn’t the ultimate Rocky of the faith, then I don’t know who is. Because this guy who penned these words, don’t you understand? When he wrote this stuff, he was in what looked to be the ultimate knock-out…he was in prison on death row writing the last words of his life. Yet even this literal prison with the impending literal death did not make him second-guess that he was anointed and called as a preacher, apostle, and teacher of truth to the nations.
The final blow was about to hit him in his ring. He would be taken out from this life, martyred for his faith.
But look at us, here in our own rings. Whose words are putting this fire in our veins? How do we know we can have this confidence?
It’s because of Paul. His God-inspired words, birthed within His God-created calling, are becoming steel in our spines – Paul has been with our Lord for a good long time, but it is his call that is still at work among us, among the nations, just like he knew it would be.
So believe me when I say that your calling is sure. Come what may, it is.
This is how I think, this is how I imagine it…at the end of these days, whether I die old or young, I will have fought to stay in the ring, assured and confident that my calling is certain, that the God-dream in my heart cannot be revoked. And that day when I die and I’m taken to glory, yeah this is how I think, and I know that Jesus enjoys a good laugh…I’ll run up to Him, fists pumping in the air, crown of righteousness on my head yelling,
“Yo Jesus!!! We did it! We did it!!!”
So let the fight begin. How do you fight for your dreams? How can you be sure of your calling? We've been asking the wrong questions all along. The calling is certain. Your purpose is secure. The fight is a fight for your faith in God - a tenacious, knock-out faith that gives black eyes to the enemy and corners doubt on the ropes and that doesn't quit until the final bell. Because we know what we're fighting for:
The prize - and the prize is not our calling, it is not the fruition of dreams. It is our Savior. And He'll be jumping up and down there at the Pearly Gates, too, saying, "Well done, champ! Well done, so well done!!"
