You’re doing great.
I know today you might feel like you’re useless. Like maybe you made a wrong turn and you didn’t expect to be sitting here like this in this place with these struggles and these unknowns for this long.
But girl…it’s ok. You’re ok. And that feeling you’re feeling? That’s ok, too.
Come on. Pick it up. Feel it close, and then let’s take it to the heart of Jesus together.
Because sometimes it’s these days when we feel like we’re not of any use to anyone that God really wants to show us how very special we are to Him.
Sometimes it’s these days when we struggle to find our value in the economy of this world, in the view of our society, and even in our own eyes that God’s trying to knock down some walls and tell us we’re glorious (2 Cor. 3:18), we’re fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), and we have been created for such a time as this (Esther 4:14).
I don’t know where you’re at. I don’t know what you’re going through. But I know that the lies of the enemy can hit hard and knock down and steal breath and lie lies that can fill your mind with the idea that you’re not who or where you’re supposed to be.
But look at you. You are there loving Jesus and chasing after His heart (even as He’s relentlessly, recklessly chasing after yours). You are asking for wisdom and waiting for His answers. You are loving the people around you (don’t think that you’re not), and your heart is constantly yearning for opportunities to serve Him.
And that’s so beautiful. And you’re so beautiful. And it’s all going to be ok.
It’s going to be ok, and this weight on your chest today will be lifted tomorrow because, gosh, don’t you know? Joy comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5). That’s a promise and a fact, and although your night may be long, and though the dusk clouds your eyes, the dawn is coming, and baby girl…it’s gonna be ok. You’re going to be ok. It’s all going to be ok.
And one day soon all of this will make sense. Even this sitting on your bed and wondering how in the world you got to this place, and then standing up and putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward anyway even though you really have no earthly idea WHY.
Because really. Come on. You know WHY. If you had chosen to follow your own way instead of follow Christ…yeah, things might have been easier right now. And maybe, maybe, you would have found some satisfaction. But you knew. You knew that you had to make a radical step of obedience that was launching you straight into the jaws of the terrifying unknown, and now that you’re there, well, you’re not sure why, but you knew you had to do it. Because You Love Jesus. And you decided a long time ago that He was worth it all. And no – you’re not perfect. But guess what – HE IS. So even if you’re messing up sometimes there in the dark of the great unknown, know this: the mercy, grace, and perfection of Jesus are covering over you, and His hand is still keeping you on course for the calling He’s placed on your life, and really – really – all that matters to Him right now, what lights up His heart with joy, is that you Love Him, You believe in Him, and you’re aching to just be obedient. So even if you’re not sure HOW to obey right now, you’re obeying because you Love Him. And even if a misstep or two happens, He knows that’s just a part of life on this fallen planet, and guess what, His hand is holding you fast (Psalm 139:10; 63:8) and it’s His grip on you that really actually matters…not your grip on trying to be perfect and do perfect and make perfect decisions.
That’s what’s so great about having a Savior. He gets to save you. You can quit trying to save yourself and you can fall headlong into the wonders of His Love and His grace and know that He’s going to catch you because He’s Your Savior, and that’s what He does.
It’s not about our works any longer. We cannot boast. (Eph2:9) But you know what the flipside of that is? It’s not about our works any longer – SO – if we are in Him, if we have put our faith in Him and we are following Him, it’s also not about our mess-ups anymore either. Because it’s His finished work on the cross that accomplishes it ALL. ALL OF IT. And, oh my goodness, if that’s not a liberating truth, then what is? Because if you’re anything like me, you’ve spent your whole life striving to be so good because in the back of your mind you were thinking your Savior was like your people – and heaven knows your people had a love that was conditional (even if they didn’t mean to) – and if their Love was based on conditions, then why wouldn’t His be? That’s maybe the toughest thing to believe about being saved: the saving is complete, and the Love that inspired that saving is without condition! And gosh, He’s going to do everything He can to convince you of this unconditional, boundless, always-chasing-you Love.
So that’s probably what’s going on today. Those feelings you’re having? They’re legitimate and they’re real. I know that it hurts to look around and wonder what the heck it is you’re even doing today that’s of any earthly use. But come on. Come with me. Be brave. Be strong. And take those feelings to the feet of your Jesus and watch Him – just watch Him – pick them right up, breathe His life-breath upon them, and turn them into messages about His unfailing Love. And let Him remind you that before you can really do anything that really truly matters, you have to be wrecked in the understanding that what really truly matters is THAT YOU KNOW YOU’RE ENDLESSLY LOVED.
Oh don’t we know it – come on let this fire burn our hearts – it’s the people that are completely secure in that revelation, the ones who know that they are radically, outrageously loved no matter what – those are the ones that can take the biggest risks and make the biggest mistakes on the wildest journey of passionately following Jesus because they know that they are Loved and that’s not going to change. And because they’re wildly risky in the basking of this great Love, and because they have this audacious faith in the heart of their Savior, well goodness gracious, somewhere along the line the big risks start paying off and Love ends up getting sown across towns and nations and even more people are set free in the wake of the life of a girl who knows to the very center of her being that she is Loved by her Savior.
So that’s what today is about. It’s a step on this journey, and one of these days, oh friend, you and me both…we are gonna wake up so free because it’s suddenly not about us anymore. Not about what we can or cannot do, have or have not done – it’s about His Love that is under, over, around, and inside of us that will never ever go away. And in that freedom we will dance into our destinies.
Wow. Today? Today is a huge success. Because today we are Loved. And the joy is coming. And it’s all going to be ok. Better than ok.
It’s going to be His Kingdom come, His will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. All because you know you are Loved, and it’s all Him, it’s all GRACE. Hallelujah.
